Landing Page Design Tips: Increase Your Sales! (Part 2)

“It’s better to be trusted than liked, Underpromise – Overperform.” Author Unknown, from Achieve Your Dream
See, that quote has never really made complete sense to me. On the one hand, I can understand how some people don’t like an “Honest Abe” because they believe there is a certain amount of crooked to everyone…or should be. But, at the same time, I don’t understand why you can’t be trusted AND liked. In the business of online marketing, you’re going nowhere FAST if you’re not both trusted and liked.
With regards to the underpromising part, how about just always make promises you’re certain you can deliver on. It’s really not that hard to be a stand-up business person.
Trust is what this part of increasing your conversion ratio and sales of your landing pages is all about. You want your soon-to-be
customers finding trust in you and finding you likable. Words are powerful. Sure, you can have the coolest looking, most modern template design for your landing page, but that doesn’t necessarily result in optimum sales potential. While you do need a presentable template design for your landing pages, you also need the right content. You need words that are written in a way that makes them informative, seem trustworthy and makes the author likable by the masses.
Now, I’m not saying you need to be some experienced novelist, because it’s not JUST about what you write. It’s important to know what details to put and where. If you include everything from the list below, you’re likely going to see a spike in sales. Oh, and aside from these initial sales, since you’ve made yourself and your product likable and trustworthy, your customers are going to start mentioning your product to their friends. More Sales!
- Put Up A Phone Number
Having a phone number up on your landing page, or any site that’s focused on the sale of goods and services, is the easiest way to look legit. Also, it’s a way to gain additional sales from people who aren’t knowledgeable enough about computers and the internet to make a purchase online. There are also people who like to shop online, but don’t want to input their billing information over the internet. (Yeah, they’d rather give their credit card information to a stranger over the phone.) - Don’t Barter With Crap
If you’re offering up something in exchange for a visitors email information (or some other information), don’t trick them into thinking their getting something of some type of value when, in reality, it’s worthless. That type of trick will just leave people bitter. Bitter fold don’t want to buy what you’re selling. for instance, if you’re selling an eBook, give away a chapter or two in exchange for their signing up for your mailing list. You should be selling a quality product. Don’t be afraid to give a little of it away for free. - Template Consistency
This is an easy one. Make sure all your pages look like they belong in the same family. - Gimmicks Are For Losers
Flashing Ads and jumbo text have been annoying people for 2 decades now. Really, no one is getting suckered in by any of that. If you want more customers, more LOYAL customers, make sure what you’re offering is high-quality and your presentation is professional. - Please, Please, Please……Don’t Have Anything Pop!
You know what kind of sites have popups and popunders? The kinds of sites no one trusts. Get my drift? - Make Sure You Can Back Up Your Claims
Your product or service is better? Great! What you’re selling is THE BEST? Sweet! What you’re selling works 10,000% better than the leading brand? Awesome. now, make sure you can back up those bold claims.
If you’re going to make statements like those above, or are going to put up statistics, you’d darn well better be able to provide evidence to support your claims. Otherwise, you’re a liar. And, no one wants to buy anything form a liar. - Make Your Terms and Conditions Easily Understandable.
A fun idea is to make a t&c for lawyers and a t&c for your customers. It brings humor into something where humor is usually void. It also makes sure you’re covering your you-know-what. - Fake Testimonials Are Obvious
Give your potential customers some kind of credit. Making up your own, glowing testimonials and putting a stock photo next to them is, in fact, pretty obvious. Don’t be that person. Get some real testimonials. If you’re selling something good, you’ll hear good things from your customers. Then, and only then, should you throw some quotes around it and call it a testimonial. - Privacy Is Important.
Have a link to a privacy statement that includes the fact that any information submitted on your site is safe, secure and won’t be given to any third parties or abused in any way. Be sure to follow those rules. If you have an email address, but the owner of that email address didn’t sign up for your solicitations, don’t send any to that email address. - Get Your Co-Brand On
If you have affiliates, you really stand to gain a lot by offering co-branding. Their traffic is coming from a different site. You’re going to want that affiliate’s landing page to blend with his referral page.
